Barley Market Size in Romania

After two years of decline, the Romanian barley market increased by 70% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Barley consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Barley Production in Romania

In value terms, barley production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of barley in Romania reduced dramatically to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -20.5% against the year before. In general, the yield indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley yield increased by +35.7% against 2020 indices. In 2022, overseas shipments of barley decreased by -35.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 64%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, barley exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 102% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Jordan (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) were the main destinations of barley exports from Romania, together accounting for 63% of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Cyprus, Spain, Turkey, Israel and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +87.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Jordan ($X), Iran ($X) and Tunisia ($X) constituted the largest markets for barley exported from Romania worldwide, with a combined 65% share of total exports. Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Cyprus, Turkey, Spain, Israel and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +82.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average barley export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 41% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, barley export price increased by +62.4% against 2018 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Iran ($X per ton) and Jordan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania

In 2022, the amount of barley imported into Romania dropped significantly to X tons, which is down by -42.8% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 385% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, barley imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 357%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Ukraine (X tons), Hungary (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) were the main suppliers of barley imports to Romania, together comprising 72% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +163.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
