Bumper Market Size in Romania

In 2022, the Romanian bumper market decreased by -32.1% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, posted a significant increase. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, bumper production shrank significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of bumpers increased by 14% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bumper exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 67%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), France (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main destinations of bumper exports from Romania, together accounting for 54% of total exports. Bulgaria, Italy, Morocco, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Algeria, Sweden and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +51.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for bumpers exports from Romania, comprising 31% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany totaled +14.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (+20.7% per year) and Bulgaria (+21.9% per year).

The average bumper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bumper export price increased by +95.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania

After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of bumpers decreased by -9.4% to X tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, bumper imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Poland (X tons), France (X tons) and Hungary (X tons) were the main suppliers of bumper imports to Romania, together comprising 47% of total imports. Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, Turkey, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Spain, Austria, Belgium and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of +40.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest bumper suppliers to Romania were Germany ($X), France ($X) and Hungary ($X), together accounting for 49% of total imports. Slovakia, Poland, Italy, Austria, Bulgaria, Turkey, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Spain and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 46%.

Among the main suppliers, Slovakia, with a CAGR of +51.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average bumper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 22%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
