The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Greece (X tons) was the main destination for cheese exports from Romania, accounting for a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese exports to Greece exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the tenth year in a row, Romania recorded growth in purchases abroad of cheese, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 29%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cheese imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest cheese supplier to Romania, with a 44% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Italy (X tons), with an 8.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Germany stood at +14.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+14.9% per year) and Italy (+27.2% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cheese to Romania, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Poland ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Germany stood at +15.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+15.6% per year) and Italy (+26.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cheese import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
