In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chestnut exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons) was the main destination for chestnut exports from Romania, with a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, chestnut exports to Spain exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Moldova (X kg), sixfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Spain amounted to +56.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+61.9% per year) and the UK (+25.0% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for chestnut exports from Romania, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Moldova ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of chestnuts, when their volume decreased by -11.3% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, chestnut imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 71% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of chestnut imports to Romania, together accounting for 59% of total imports.
