Coffee Substitutes Market Size in Romania

In 2022, the Romanian coffee substitutes market decreased by -0.5% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. In 2022, shipments abroad of coffee substitutes containing coffee decreased by -46.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 222% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee substitutes exports contracted markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 230%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Jordan (X tons), Bosnia and Herzegovina (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main destinations of coffee substitutes exports from Romania, with a combined 67% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Bosnia and Herzegovina (with a CAGR of +405.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bosnia and Herzegovina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Romania

Coffee substitutes imports into Romania skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, rising by 43% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 1,160%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee substitutes imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 1,036%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Hungary (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of coffee substitutes imports to Romania, with a combined 71% share of total imports. Sweden, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +421.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
