After three years of growth, the Romanian disinfectant market decreased by -23.2% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, recorded buoyant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then fell significantly in the following year.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. Disinfectant exports from Romania expanded slightly to X tons in 2021, picking up by 4.7% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 70%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, disinfectant exports reduced slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 142% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria (X tons) was the main destination for disinfectant exports from Romania, accounting for a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, disinfectant exports to Bulgaria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Serbia (X tons), threefold. Moldova (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Bulgaria stood at +5.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Serbia (-8.4% per year) and Moldova (-17.4% per year).

In value terms, Bulgaria ($X) remains the key foreign market for disinfectant exports from Romania, comprising 43% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Serbia, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Bulgaria amounted to +19.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (-4.6% per year) and Serbia (-0.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average disinfectant export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 95%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Montenegro ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Montenegro (+27.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania

In 2021, after seven years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of disinfectants, when their volume decreased by -40.4% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 122%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, disinfectant imports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 189%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of disinfectant imports to Romania, with a combined 41% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Italy, Austria, the UK, Greece, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, which together accounted for a further 51%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Slovakia (with a CAGR of +39.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest disinfectant suppliers to Romania were France ($X), Germany ($X) and Belgium ($X), with a combined 48% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Austria, Spain, the UK, Italy, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Greece, Hungary and Slovakia, which together accounted for a further 43%.

Slovakia, with a CAGR of +38.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average disinfectant import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
