For the fifth year in a row, Romania recorded growth in overseas shipments of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs, which increased by 263% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 32,500%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, seafood meals and pellets exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 14,254% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for seafood meals and pellets exports from Romania, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, seafood meals and pellets exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X kg), sixfold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Moldova totaled -18.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-47.4% per year) and Germany (-59.6% per year).
In value terms, Moldova ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs exports from Romania, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Moldova totaled -16.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (-45.9% per year) and Germany (-57.0% per year).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania
In 2021, the amount of flours, meals and pellets of fish or of crustaceans and molluscs imported into Romania totaled X tons, increasing by 7.3% on the previous year's figure. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +48.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, seafood meals and pellets imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) were the main suppliers of seafood meals and pellets imports to Romania, with a combined 98% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +48.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest seafood meals and pellets suppliers to Romania were Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and Denmark ($X), with a combined 96% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, Italy, with a CAGR of +48.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In general, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, seafood meals and pellets import price decreased by -28.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Peru ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
