For the third year in a row, the Romanian market for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 108% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption saw a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports from Romania
In 2021, overseas shipments of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 78%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports from Romania, with a 60% share of total exports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Moldova (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Bulgaria (X tons), with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hungary totaled -4.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+54.4% per year) and Bulgaria (-2.8% per year).
In value terms, Bulgaria ($X), Hungary ($X) and Moldova ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine exported from Romania worldwide, together accounting for 82% of total exports. These countries were followed by Serbia and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 17%.
Ukraine, with a CAGR of +67.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 57%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+31.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania
In 2021, approx. X tons of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines were imported into Romania; reducing by -20.7% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 135% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 149%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine to Romania, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), fourfold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany amounted to +46.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+164.2% per year) and Hungary (-0.5% per year).
In value terms, Austria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines to Romania, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 25% share of total imports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 2.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Austria amounted to +126.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+18.0% per year) and Bulgaria (-7.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average import price for fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodines stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 45%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (-0.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
