Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for marble granules and powder exports from Romania, accounting for a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, marble granules and powder exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), twofold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Moldova amounted to +15.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-9.5% per year) and the Czech Republic (-3.4% per year).

In value terms, Moldova ($X), Hungary ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) were the largest markets for marble granules and powder exported from Romania worldwide, with a combined 89% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Ukraine, the Netherlands and Bulgaria, which together accounted for a further 9.5%.

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of granules, chippings and powder of marble, when their volume decreased by -3.3% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 36%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In value terms, marble granules and powder imports reached $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +90.0% against 2013 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 33%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Serbia (X tons), Greece (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main suppliers of marble granules and powder imports to Romania, together comprising 88% of total imports. Italy, North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Germany and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 9.3%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for North Macedonia (with a CAGR of +193.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
