The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 814% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exports skyrocketed to $X in 2019. Overall, exports, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 653% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2019, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Greece (X tons) was the main destination for aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exports from Romania, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exports to Greece exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X kg), threefold.
From 2012 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Greece was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+1.9% per year) and the Netherlands (-40.1% per year).
In value terms, Greece ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for halogenated derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons exports from Romania, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2019, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Greece was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+69.1% per year) and the Netherlands (-41.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives export price stood at $X per ton in 2019, with an increase of 177% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 5,153%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2019, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2019, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Greece ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2019, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+65.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Romania
For the fifth year in a row, Romania recorded growth in supplies from abroad of halogenated derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons, which increased by 36% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports posted moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 176%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 886% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives to Romania, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), sevenfold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belgium amounted to +52.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-0.1% per year) and the Netherlands (+4.9% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of halogenated derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons to Romania, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with a 5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Belgium stood at +60.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+11.6% per year) and the Netherlands (+22.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 257%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hungary (+68.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
