The Romanian knife and scissors market rose notably to $X in 2021, surging by 6.7% against the previous year. In 2021, overseas shipments of knives, scissors and blades increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 635% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, knife and scissors exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 462%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for knife and scissors exports from Romania, with a 28% share of total exports. Moreover, knife and scissors exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), twofold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, the amount of knives, scissors and blades imported into Romania rose to X tons, surging by 3.4% compared with 2020. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -12.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 42%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, knife and scissors imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of knife and scissors to Romania, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, knife and scissors imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold.
