The Romanian knife and scissors market rose notably to $X in 2021, surging by 6.7% against the previous year. Exports from Romania
In 2021, overseas shipments of knives, scissors and blades increased by 32% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 635% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, knife and scissors exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 462%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Italy (X tons) was the main destination for knife and scissors exports from Romania, with a 28% share of total exports. Moreover, knife and scissors exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), twofold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy totaled -10.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-14.2% per year) and Spain (+32.5% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest markets for knife and scissors exported from Romania worldwide, together comprising 44% of total exports. Moldova, Hungary, France, the United States, Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Croatia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 39%.
Among the main countries of destination, the United States, with a CAGR of +186.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average knife and scissors export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -7.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, knife and scissors export price decreased by -22.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 130%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Croatia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Romania
In 2021, the amount of knives, scissors and blades imported into Romania rose to X tons, surging by 3.4% compared with 2020. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -12.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 42%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, knife and scissors imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 64% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of knife and scissors to Romania, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, knife and scissors imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hungary (X tons), with a 9.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +1.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+9.4% per year) and Hungary (+14.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the largest knife and scissors suppliers to Romania, with a combined 58% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Italy, Hungary, Poland, France, Greece, the Czech Republic and Austria, which together accounted for a further 30%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Greece, with a CAGR of +42.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average knife and scissors import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 5% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+8.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
