In 2022, approx. X tons of lactose and lactose syrup were imported into Romania; rising by 45% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, lactose imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. Poland (X tons), France (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of lactose imports to Romania, together comprising 65% of total imports. Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 32%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the price for Slovakia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+19.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
