The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Italy (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Moldova (X tons) were the main destinations of leather exports from Romania, with a combined 77% share of total exports. Austria, Germany, Portugal, France, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Netherlands and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Portugal (with a CAGR of +55.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Austria ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for leather exported from Romania worldwide, together comprising 71% of total exports. These countries were followed by Moldova, Germany, Portugal, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, the Netherlands and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 21%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +109.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average leather export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Cambodia (+108.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of leather, when their volume increased by 5.1% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest leather supplier to Romania, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, leather imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X tons), with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy stood at -6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-8.7% per year) and the UK (+34.7% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather to Romania, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 7.7% share of total imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 4.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy stood at -5.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-7.5% per year) and the UK (+32.0% per year).

The average leather import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
