As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory exports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Moldova (X tons) was the main destination for lettuce and chicory exports from Romania, with a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, lettuce and chicory exports to Moldova exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), more than tenfold. Hungary (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Moldova stood at -2.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+34.3% per year) and Hungary (-30.0% per year).

In value terms, Moldova ($X) remains the key foreign market for lettuce and chicory exports from Romania, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 4.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Moldova totaled -6.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+30.6% per year) and Belgium (-10.4% per year).

In 2022, purchases abroad of lettuce and chicory increased by 10% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 68% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lettuce and chicory imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Hungary (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of lettuce and chicory imports to Romania, with a combined 73% share of total imports. Spain, Serbia and the Netherlands lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
