Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs exports dropped sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 745%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Moldova (X tons), Bulgaria (X tons) and Austria (X tons) were the main destinations of molluscs exports from Romania, together accounting for 97% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +83.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Moldova ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) exports from Romania, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Moldova stood at +77.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (-0.6% per year) and Austria (0.0% per year).

The average molluscs export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild reduction. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, purchases abroad of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) increased by 35% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, molluscs imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted buoyant growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest molluscs supplier to Romania, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, molluscs imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Spain stood at +28.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+11.5% per year) and China (+12.4% per year).
In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus) to Romania, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Netherlands ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain amounted to +31.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+15.6% per year) and Italy (-4.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average molluscs import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.0%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
