The Romanian orange market reached $X in 2022, rising by 2.9% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. After two years of decline, overseas shipments of oranges increased by 302% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, orange exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 497%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Ukraine (X tons) was the main destination for orange exports from Romania, accounting for a 50% share of total exports. Moreover, orange exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Hungary (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 20% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ukraine totaled +1.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (-15.5% per year) and Poland (+22.9% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for oranges exports from Romania, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Poland ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 19% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Ukraine amounted to +1.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+25.3% per year) and Hungary (-15.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average orange export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -34% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 71%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Moldova ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of oranges, when their volume increased by 4.6% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 59% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, orange imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Greece (X tons) constituted the largest orange supplier to Romania, accounting for a 50% share of total imports. Moreover, orange imports from Greece exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Greece totaled +1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+13.2% per year) and Egypt (+14.2% per year).
In value terms, Greece ($X) constituted the largest supplier of oranges to Romania, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Greece amounted to +3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+15.0% per year) and Egypt (+14.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average orange import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average import price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
