In value terms, perfume exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw moderate growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 44%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Bulgaria (X tons) was the main destination for perfume exports from Romania, accounting for a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, perfume exports to Bulgaria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Moldova (X tons), fourfold. The Netherlands (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Bulgaria totaled +8.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+6.9% per year) and the Netherlands (+62.5% per year).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 24% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was growth in purchases abroad of perfumes and toilet waters, when their volume increased by 3.9% to X tons. In general, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 63%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, perfume imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 23%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest perfume supplier to Romania, with a 37% share of total imports. Moreover, perfume imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X tons), with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland amounted to +2.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+76.9% per year) and Spain (+9.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest perfume suppliers to Romania were Germany ($X), France ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X), with a combined 49% share of total imports. Poland, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, Hungary and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +82.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average perfume import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, perfume import price increased by +102.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 33%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
