In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for preserved tomatoes exports from Romania, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Hungary ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK totaled +32.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Hungary (+147.9% per year) and Moldova (+35.1% per year).

The average preserved tomato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 16% against the previous year. From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+5.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of preserved tomatoes decreased by -15.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after six years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -18.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, preserved tomato imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of preserved tomato to Romania, with a 71% share of total imports. Moreover, preserved tomato imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), fourfold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy amounted to +9.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+18.2% per year) and the Czech Republic (-4.2% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of preserved tomatoes to Romania, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Italy stood at +11.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+18.1% per year) and the Czech Republic (-2.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average preserved tomato import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 24%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Bulgaria ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
