In 2022, the Romanian steel railway material market increased by 8.2% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 544%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

India (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Slovenia (X tons) were the main destinations of steel railway material exports from Romania, together comprising 50% of total exports. Egypt, Morocco, Austria, Taiwan (Chinese), North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Poland and France lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +17,776.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for steel railway material exported from Romania were Turkey ($X), Morocco ($X) and India ($X), together accounting for 52% of total exports. The average steel railway material export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 36% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to North Macedonia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Morocco (+15.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Steel railway material imports into Romania skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, growing by 37% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports posted temperate growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 103%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, steel railway material imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +98.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 59%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Austria (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of steel railway material to Romania, with a 75% share of total imports. Moreover, steel railway material imports from Austria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Austria stood at +16.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+1.6% per year) and Germany (-8.8% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) constituted the largest supplier of railway material of steel to Romania, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Austria stood at +16.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-2.2% per year) and Poland (+1.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average steel railway material import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 49%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Poland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
