In 2021, the Romanian market for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced reduction. Refractory bricks, blocks and tiles consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, overseas shipments of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles decreased by -6.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports saw a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 67%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Hungary (X tons), Slovakia (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exports from Romania, together accounting for 95% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +31.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Slovakia ($X), Italy ($X) and Hungary ($X) were the largest markets for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles exported from Romania worldwide, together comprising 94% of total exports.

Slovakia, with a CAGR of +48.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After two years of decline, purchases abroad of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles increased by 65% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -2.6% against 2018 indices. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 60%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Germany (X tons), China (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main suppliers of refractory bricks, blocks and tiles imports to Romania, together accounting for 54% of total imports. These countries were followed by Denmark, Italy, Austria, Greece, Spain, Belgium, the UK, Sweden, Poland and France, which together accounted for a further 42%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +172.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for refractory bricks, blocks and tiles stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
