In 2021, supplies from abroad of salicylic acid and its salts increased by 133% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 173% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, salicylic acid imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of salicylic acid to Romania, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, salicylic acid imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by China (X tons), with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands stood at +160.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+49.7% per year) and China (-8.3% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), Poland ($X) and Hungary ($X) appeared to be the largest salicylic acid suppliers to Romania, with a combined 89% share of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +156.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 102%.
