In 2022, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of surgical gloves, when their volume decreased by -35.6% to X tons. In general, exports, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 740%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 831%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for surgical glove exports from Romania, accounting for a 64% share of total exports. Moreover, surgical glove exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bulgaria (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Moldova (X tons), with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Austria totaled +228.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (+12.7% per year) and Moldova (+22.6% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for surgical gloves exports from Romania, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Moldova ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Bulgaria, with a 17% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria stood at +235.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Moldova (+29.1% per year) and Bulgaria (+13.5% per year).

In 2022, the average surgical glove export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, surgical glove export price increased by +104.9% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 29%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Moldova ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Greece (+17.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of surgical gloves were imported into Romania; falling by -20.1% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, recorded a tangible increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 105%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, surgical glove imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 139% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then plummeted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest surgical glove supplier to Romania, with a 48% share of total imports. Moreover, surgical glove imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (X tons), threefold. Malaysia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Poland amounted to +3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+2.9% per year) and Malaysia (+5.9% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of surgical gloves to Romania, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Poland totaled +13.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+8.2% per year) and Malaysia (+17.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average surgical glove import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -11.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 63% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
