In 2021, the Romanian non-chicken table egg market increased by 5% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after six years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of table eggs, excluding hen eggs decreased by -68.3% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a precipitous decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 468% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. In general, exports faced a sharp contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 657%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for non-chicken table egg exports from Romania, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, non-chicken table egg exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), sixfold. Bulgaria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hungary totaled +47.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+104.2% per year) and Bulgaria (-25.9% per year).

In value terms, Hungary ($X), the UK ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) constituted the largest markets for non-chicken table egg exported from Romania worldwide, together comprising 100% of total exports.

The UK, with a CAGR of +93.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average non-chicken table egg export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 31% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+76.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania

In 2021, approx. X tons of table eggs, excluding hen eggs were imported into Romania; which is down by -6.3% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 245% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 260%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Poland (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of non-chicken table egg to Romania, accounting for a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, non-chicken table egg imports from Poland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Bulgaria (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (X tons), with a 6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Poland stood at +11.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+4.5% per year) and Italy (+120.4% per year).

In value terms, Poland ($X) constituted the largest supplier of non-chicken table egg to Romania, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Poland totaled +12.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Bulgaria (+1.6% per year) and Italy (+139.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average non-chicken table egg import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 48% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from Slovakia ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Hungary ($X per ton) and Bulgaria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
