Triticale Market Size in Romania

The Romanian triticale market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.1% against the previous year. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of triticale in Romania declined to X tons per ha in 2022, reducing by -10.9% against 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the yield increased by 26% against the previous year. Italy (X tons) was the main destination for triticale exports from Romania, with a 89% share of total exports. Moreover, triticale exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Austria (X tons), more than tenfold. Bulgaria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Italy stood at +2.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Austria (-19.9% per year) and Bulgaria (-26.9% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for triticale exports from Romania, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Bulgaria ($X), with a 4.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy stood at +7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (-19.4% per year) and Austria (-17.0% per year).

Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 520%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, triticale imports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 320% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Hungary (X tons) constituted the largest triticale supplier to Romania, accounting for a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, triticale imports from Hungary exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Austria (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Hungary was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Austria (+12.9% per year) and Italy (-3.5% per year).
