The Romanian glass fiber market dropped to $X in 2021, which is down by -5.9% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 194% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Romania
In 2021, approx. X tons of voiles, webs, mats and other articles of glass fibers were exported from Romania; jumping by 15% compared with the previous year. In general, exports saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 256% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, glass fiber exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Hungary (X tons) was the main destination for glass fiber exports from Romania, with a 38% share of total exports. Moreover, glass fiber exports to Hungary exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovenia (X tons), fourfold. Serbia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Hungary amounted to +12.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovenia (+91.7% per year) and Serbia (+9.0% per year).
In value terms, Hungary ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X) constituted the largest markets for glass fiber exported from Romania worldwide, together accounting for 45% of total exports. These countries were followed by Slovenia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Croatia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Ukraine, North Macedonia and Kosovo, which together accounted for a further 37%.
Slovenia, with a CAGR of +86.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average glass fiber export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 9.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 97% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kosovo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania
In 2021, imports of voiles, webs, mats and other articles of glass fibers into Romania dropped to X tons, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -0.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 40% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, glass fiber imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +18.4% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 26%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest glass fiber supplier to Romania, with a 31% share of total imports. Moreover, glass fiber imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X tons), twofold. Russia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey totaled +48.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+3.2% per year) and Russia (+12.7% per year).
In value terms, the largest glass fiber suppliers to Romania were Turkey ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 38% of total imports. These countries were followed by China, Russia, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, France, Belgium, Poland, Egypt and Moldova, which together accounted for a further 42%.
Moldova, with a CAGR of +283.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average glass fiber import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for the Czech Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+10.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
