In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Romanian wood chips and particles market, when its value decreased by -40.6% to $X. In general, consumption, however, showed a moderate increase. Wood chips and particles consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wood chips and particles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a precipitous contraction. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Moldova (X cubic meters), Italy (X cubic meters) and Hungary (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of wood chips and particles exports from Romania, with a combined 89% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Moldova (with a CAGR of +41.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Italy ($X), Moldova ($X) and Hungary ($X) were the largest markets for wood chips and particles exported from Romania worldwide, together comprising 89% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bulgaria (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of wood chips and particles, when their volume decreased by -48.2% to X cubic meters. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 913%. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, wood chips and particles imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 496% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In 2022, Ukraine (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of wood chips and particles to Romania, with a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, wood chips and particles imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belarus (X cubic meters), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovakia (X cubic meters), with a 0.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine amounted to +121.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+212.4% per year) and Slovakia (+13.7% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood chips and particles to Romania, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 1.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine stood at +129.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+189.0% per year) and Slovakia (+9.1% per year).

In 2022, the average wood chips and particles import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, growing by 36% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 110%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Ukraine ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
