Wood Fuel Market Size in Romania

The Romanian wood fuel market rose to $X in 2022, with an increase of 2% against the previous year. In general, the total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. In 2022, overseas shipments of wood fuel increased by 133% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after seven years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X cubic meters in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood fuel exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. The exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Hungary (X cubic meters), Slovakia (X cubic meters) and Italy (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of wood fuel exports from Romania, together comprising 83% of total exports. Denmark, Germany, Spain and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Spain (with a CAGR of +160.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for wood fuel exported from Romania were Slovakia ($X), Hungary ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports. Denmark, Germany, Spain and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Among the main countries of destination, Spain, with a CAGR of +120.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average wood fuel export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, reducing by -17.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 48% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Hungary ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+14.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania

Wood fuel imports into Romania declined remarkably to X cubic meters in 2022, which is down by -40.8% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 568% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wood fuel imports declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 806%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ukraine (X cubic meters) constituted the largest supplier of wood fuel to Romania, accounting for a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, wood fuel imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Czech Republic (X cubic meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Slovakia (X cubic meters), with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Ukraine totaled -5.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+130.0% per year) and Slovakia (+33.9% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood fuel to Romania, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 29% share of total imports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine amounted to +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Czech Republic (+169.0% per year) and Slovakia (+38.0% per year).

The average wood fuel import price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, rising by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Hungary ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
