The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wood pellets exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 95%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Austria (X tons) was the main destination for wood pellets exports from Romania, with a 52% share of total exports. Moreover, wood pellets exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), threefold. Bulgaria (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Austria stood at +8.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-5.9% per year) and Bulgaria (+10.8% per year).

In value terms, Austria ($X), Italy ($X) and Bulgaria ($X) constituted the largest markets for wood pellets exported from Romania worldwide, with a combined 75% share of total exports. Greece, Slovenia, Germany and Hungary lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 23%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Slovenia, with a CAGR of +24.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average wood pellets export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 39% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hungary (+7.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Romania

After seven years of growth, purchases abroad of wood pellets decreased by -12.7% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 615% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, wood pellets imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 457%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Ukraine (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of wood pellets to Romania, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, wood pellets imports from Ukraine exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Turkey (X tons), with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Ukraine amounted to +90.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+65.7% per year) and Turkey (+376.0% per year).

In value terms, Ukraine ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood pellets to Romania, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with a 3.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Russia, with a 3.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Ukraine stood at +102.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+248.2% per year) and Russia (+70.5% per year).

In 2022, the average wood pellets import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 47% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight contraction. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Slovenia (+56.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
