Over the period under review, consumption recorded a perceptible setback. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, shipments abroad of woven fabrics of cotton increased by 24% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, exports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 205%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cotton fabric exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Austria (X tons) was the main destination for cotton fabric exports from Romania, with a 58% share of total exports. Moreover, cotton fabric exports to Austria exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Bulgaria (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Moldova (X tons), with a 6.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Austria amounted to +165.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (+19.7% per year) and Moldova (+51.3% per year).
In value terms, Austria ($X) remains the key foreign market for woven fabrics of cotton exports from Romania, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bulgaria ($X), with a 9.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Moldova, with a 6.4% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Austria totaled +144.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bulgaria (+12.0% per year) and Moldova (+41.3% per year).

In 2021, the average cotton fabric export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

For the fifth year in a row, Romania recorded decline in purchases abroad of woven fabrics of cotton, which decreased by -14.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cotton fabric imports rose slightly to $X in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 43%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Italy (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of cotton fabric imports to Romania, together comprising 71% of total imports. Hungary, Belgium, Pakistan, China, France and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Pakistan (with a CAGR of +6.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
