For the fourth consecutive year, the Russian antibiotic market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 23% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption posted a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, antibiotic production declined significantly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a deep downturn. In 2021, overseas shipments of antibiotics decreased by -23.4% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, antibiotic exports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 207% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belarus (X tons) was the main destination for antibiotic exports from Russia, with a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, antibiotic exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belarus totaled +46.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+40.9% per year) and China (-16.6% per year).

In value terms, Belarus ($X) remains the key foreign market for antibiotics exports from Russia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kazakhstan ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Belarus amounted to +49.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+31.9% per year) and China (-19.7% per year).

In 2021, the average antibiotic export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -58.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 79%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the Russian Federation

For the third consecutive year, Russia recorded growth in overseas purchases of antibiotics, which increased by 2.7% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, antibiotic imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest antibiotic supplier to Russia, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, antibiotic imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), more than tenfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +8.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+16.5% per year) and India (+1.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of antibiotics to Russia, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 7.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +10.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+14.3% per year) and Spain (+3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antibiotic import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
