The Russian asparagus market dropped dramatically to $X in 2022, waning by -16.9% against the previous year. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the period from 2020 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan (X kg) was the main destination for asparagus exports from Russia, with a 70% share of total exports. Moreover, asparagus exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belarus (X kg), twofold.
From 2020 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan stood at +10.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+13.7% per year) and Ukraine (-74.2% per year).
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the key foreign market for asparagus exports from Russia, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.
From 2020 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kazakhstan totaled +5.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+25.7% per year) and Ukraine (-61.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average asparagus export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -11.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+50.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the Russian Federation
Asparagus imports into Russia dropped to X tons in 2022, falling by -14.2% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 119% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, asparagus imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 220% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Peru (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of asparagus to Russia, accounting for a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, asparagus imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), fivefold. Mexico (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Peru amounted to -4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-5.3% per year) and Mexico (+5.4% per year).
In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of asparagus to Russia, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Mexico, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Peru amounted to +13.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-0.4% per year) and Mexico (+28.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average asparagus import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -3.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (+22.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
