The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 137%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bentonite imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In 2022, Azerbaijan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of bentonite to Russia, with a 64% share of total imports. Moreover, bentonite imports from Azerbaijan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Kazakhstan (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Turkey (X tons), with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Azerbaijan totaled -20.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kazakhstan (+8.8% per year) and Turkey (-0.6% per year).

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of bentonite to Russia, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Turkey ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Azerbaijan amounted to -21.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+2.3% per year) and Kazakhstan (-1.4% per year).

The average bentonite import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bentonite import price increased by +34.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
