Butter Market Size in the Russian Federation
The Russian butter market totaled $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, butter exports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 96%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Kazakhstan (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) were the main destinations of butter exports from Russia, with a combined 99% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +120.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for butter exported from Russia were Ukraine ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Armenia ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.
Ukraine, with a CAGR of +99.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average butter export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the average export price increased by 33%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of butter, when their volume decreased by -0.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, butter imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -9.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 51%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Belarus (X tons), Argentina (X tons) and Uruguay (X tons) were the main suppliers of butter imports to Russia, together accounting for 87% of total imports. New Zealand, Turkey and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +127.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belarus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of butter to Russia, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Belarus totaled +5.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+18.9% per year) and Uruguay (+4.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average butter import price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were Belarus ($X per ton) and New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for Uruguay ($X per ton) and Argentina ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
