The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbonate exports totaled $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 15%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Cyprus (X tons) were the main destinations of carbonate exports from Russia, with a combined 60% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Cyprus (with a CAGR of +89.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Ukraine ($X) were the largest markets for carbonate exported from Russia worldwide, with a combined 54% share of total exports. Poland, India, Cyprus, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania and Moldova lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Cyprus, with a CAGR of +75.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average carbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average export price increased by 11% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Cyprus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lithuania (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.
Carbonate Imports
Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2021, overseas purchases of carbonates and peroxocarbonates increased by 48% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 95%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, carbonate imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest carbonate supplier to Russia, with a 77% share of total imports. Moreover, carbonate imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Chile (X tons), with a 4.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Turkey totaled -4.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-2.1% per year) and Chile (+12.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest carbonate suppliers to Russia were Chile ($X), Turkey ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 65% of total imports.
In terms of the main suppliers, Chile, with a CAGR of +17.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average carbonate import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -13.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 152%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+40.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
