Plastic Bottle Market Size in the Russian Federation

The Russian plastic bottle market surged to $X in 2022, picking up by 77% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a precipitous slump. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2020 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 21%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, plastic bottle exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2020 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the last two-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +22.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Belarus, with a CAGR of +15.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 20%. Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Ukraine ($X per ton) and Kyrgyzstan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) and Kazakhstan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of carboys, bottles and similar articles of plastics imported into Russia dropped to X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, imports saw a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, plastic bottle imports fell to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2020 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2022, Belarus (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic bottle to Russia, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic bottle imports from Belarus exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), fourfold. In terms of the main suppliers, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +76.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average plastic bottle import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -7.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2020 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +7.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+51.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
