Other Cereals Market Size in the Russian Federation

In 2021, the Russian other cereals market was finally on the rise to reach $X after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable slump. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Other Cereals Production in the Russian Federation

In value terms, other cereals production contracted modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 269% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of other cerealses in Russia shrank to X tons per ha in 2021, reducing by -2.1% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the yield increased by 18% against the previous year. The other cereals yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The other cereals harvested area in Russia expanded significantly to X ha in 2021, with an increase of 9.4% against the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, saw a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to other cereals production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from the Russian Federation

Other cereals exports from Russia contracted markedly to X tons in 2021, reducing by -23% on 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 552% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, other cereals exports declined dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 624% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan (X tons) was the main destination for other cereals exports from Russia, accounting for a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, other cereals exports to Azerbaijan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X tons), threefold. Belarus (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Azerbaijan amounted to +12.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+61.1% per year) and Belarus (+1.2% per year).

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Belarus ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for other cereals exported from Russia worldwide, together comprising 81% of total exports. Armenia lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 6.7%.

Armenia, with a CAGR of +86.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average other cereals export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -51.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 73%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Qatar (+116.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Other Cereals Imports

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2021, approx. X tons of other cerealses were imported into Russia; jumping by 47% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 404%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, other cereals imports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 316% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Peru (X tons) constituted the largest other cereals supplier to Russia, with a 72% share of total imports. Moreover, other cereals imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Ukraine (X tons), fourfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Peru amounted to +47.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Ukraine (+34.1% per year) and the United States (+33.5% per year).

In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of other cereals to Russia, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 24% share of total imports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Peru amounted to +42.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+32.4% per year) and Ukraine (+22.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average other cereals import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -22.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 138% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+15.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
