The Russian cheese and curd market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of cheese and curd, when their volume decreased by -7.2% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 17%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.
In value terms, cheese and curd exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, total exports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +92.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Exports by Country
Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main destination for cheese and curd exports from Russia, accounting for a 43% share of total exports. Moreover, cheese and curd exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Belarus (X tons), with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kazakhstan totaled +4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Ukraine (+2.4% per year) and Belarus (+8.1% per year).
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Ukraine ($X) and Belarus ($X) were the largest markets for cheese and curd exported from Russia worldwide, with a combined 79% share of total exports. Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +28.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cheese and curd export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 23%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkmenistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tajikistan (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2022, after six years of growth, there was decline in supplies from abroad of cheese and curd, when their volume decreased by -1.9% to X tons. Overall, imports saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cheese and curd imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Belarus (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of cheese and curd to Russia, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese and curd imports from Belarus exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Argentina (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Serbia (X tons), with a 5.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Belarus totaled +12.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+10.3% per year) and Serbia (+16.2% per year).
In value terms, Belarus ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cheese and curd to Russia, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Argentina ($X), with an 8.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Serbia, with a 3.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Belarus totaled +12.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Argentina (+11.1% per year) and Serbia (+13.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average cheese and curd import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 22% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Serbia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Finland (+9.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
