Overall, total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +100.3% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, chlorides exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Belarus (X tons) were the main destinations of chlorides exports from Russia, with a combined 40% share of total exports. Romania, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Nigeria, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Italy and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Latvia (with a CAGR of +62.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for chlorides exported from Russia were Kazakhstan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Ukraine ($X), together accounting for 44% of total exports. Kyrgyzstan, Nigeria, Romania, Turkmenistan, Latvia, Turkey, Lithuania, Poland, Italy and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Latvia, with a CAGR of +46.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average chlorides export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Nigeria (+8.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2021, supplies from abroad of chlorides (excluding ammonium chloride) increased by 22% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chlorides imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest chlorides supplier to Russia, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, chlorides imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Finland (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at -2.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Finland (-6.2% per year) and India (+4.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Argentina ($X) and India ($X) appeared to be the largest chlorides suppliers to Russia, together accounting for 70% of total imports.

Argentina, with a CAGR of +33.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average chlorides import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 3.3% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, chlorides import price increased by +80.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 30%. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Finland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
