Belarus (X tons) was the main destination for dried onion exports from Russia, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, dried onion exports to Belarus exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Ukraine (X tons), with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belarus totaled +21.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+26.8% per year) and Ukraine (-27.3% per year).
In value terms, Belarus ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and Ukraine ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for dried onion exported from Russia worldwide, together accounting for 95% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Belarus, with a CAGR of +20.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average dried onion export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -8.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (-0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2021, purchases abroad of dried onions decreased by -4.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports saw a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, dried onion imports reached $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest dried onion supplier to Russia, accounting for a 81% share of total imports. Moreover, dried onion imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), eightfold. Uzbekistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled -1.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+10.3% per year) and Uzbekistan (+1.4% per year).
In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dried onion to Russia, comprising 77% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Uzbekistan, with a 5.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from India amounted to +1.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+12.9% per year) and Uzbekistan (+7.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average dried onion import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 10% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while the price for India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+8.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
