Eggplant Market Size in the Russian Federation

In 2022, the Russian eggplant market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of eggplants (aubergines), when their volume increased by 10% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, eggplant imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

China (X tons), Israel (X tons) and Armenia (X tons) were the main suppliers of eggplant imports to Russia, together accounting for 97% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +36.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Israel ($X) and Armenia ($X) appeared to be the largest eggplant suppliers to Russia, together comprising 97% of total imports.

Israel, with a CAGR of +38.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average eggplant import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Armenia ($X per ton), while the price for Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
