The Russian expanded clays market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, growing by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag, when their volume decreased by -6.7% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a slight descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, expanded clays exports contracted markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 50%. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main destination for expanded clays exports from Russia, with a 56% share of total exports. Moreover, expanded clays exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), sixfold. The Czech Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Kazakhstan was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+17.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+14.7% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for expanded clays exported from Russia were Germany ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and the United States ($X), together comprising 60% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Germany, with a CAGR of +24.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average expanded clays export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -18.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average export price increased by 33%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag decreased by -6.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 106% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, expanded clays imports shrank to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 98%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Belarus (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of expanded clays imports to Russia, together accounting for 98% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +94.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of exfoliated vermiculite, expanded clays and foamed slag to Russia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Belarus, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Kazakhstan totaled +120.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-6.4% per year) and Belarus (-0.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average expanded clays import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, expanded clays import price increased by +33.4% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 39%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
