Frozen Freshwater Fish Market Size in the Russian Federation

The Russian frozen freshwater fish market rose sharply to $X in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 34%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish exports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Korea (X tons), Japan (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of frozen freshwater fish exports from Russia, with a combined 73% share of total exports. Azerbaijan, Belarus and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Azerbaijan (with a CAGR of +23.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X) constituted the largest markets for frozen freshwater fish exported from Russia worldwide, together accounting for 78% of total exports. Belarus, Azerbaijan and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

Among the main countries of destination, Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +35.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

The average frozen freshwater fish export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 12%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Azerbaijan (+10.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of frozen freshwater fish increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after five years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Kazakhstan (X tons), Ecuador (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) were the main suppliers of frozen freshwater fish imports to Russia, together comprising 60% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +58.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Turkey ($X) appeared to be the largest frozen freshwater fish suppliers to Russia, with a combined 50% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +65.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average frozen freshwater fish import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, frozen freshwater fish import price decreased by -4.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+38.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
