Graphite Market Size in the Russian Federation

The Russian graphite market surged to $X in 2021, with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a pronounced contraction. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Graphite exports from Russia fell significantly to X tons in 2021, declining by -16.5% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 295%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then plummeted in the following year.

In value terms, graphite exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed slight growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 142%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Austria (X tons), Belarus (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) were the main destinations of graphite exports from Russia, together comprising 90% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine and Germany, which together accounted for a further 8%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +81.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Austria ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for graphite exports from Russia, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Austria totaled +29.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+14.8% per year) and Kazakhstan (+10.7% per year).

In 2021, the average graphite export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep downturn. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (-0.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into the Russian Federation

Graphite imports into Russia soared to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 32% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 383%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphite imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 94% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) were the main suppliers of graphite imports to Russia, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Norway, Belarus and Ukraine, which together accounted for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belarus (with a CAGR of +140.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Germany ($X) and Madagascar ($X) constituted the largest graphite suppliers to Russia, together accounting for 80% of total imports. Mozambique, Norway, Belarus and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Among the main suppliers, Belarus, with a CAGR of +191.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average graphite import price amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the import price, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 148% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
