Hop Market Size in the Russian Federation

Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of hops production in Russia reduced slightly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021 figures. In general, the harvested area recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the harvested area increased by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to hop production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from the Russian Federation
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of hops, when their volume decreased by -6.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 745%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, hop exports expanded notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 720% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Ukraine (X tons) was the main destination for hop exports from Russia, accounting for a 69% share of total exports. Moreover, hop exports to Ukraine exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belarus (X tons), threefold. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Ukraine amounted to +34.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+72.6% per year) and Kazakhstan (+10.6% per year).
In value terms, Ukraine ($X) remains the key foreign market for hops exports from Russia, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belarus ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Ukraine stood at +48.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belarus (+83.7% per year) and Kazakhstan (+19.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average hop export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hop export price decreased by -13.7% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 51% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ukraine ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Azerbaijan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Ukraine (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2022, overseas purchases of hops increased by 4.2% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +19.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 42%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, hop imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +98.7% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 30%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Germany (X tons) constituted the largest hop supplier to Russia, accounting for a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, hop imports from Germany exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Turkey (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (X tons), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Germany stood at -3.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Turkey (+4,565.8% per year) and the United States (+8.8% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X), the United States ($X) and the Czech Republic ($X) constituted the largest hop suppliers to Russia, with a combined 77% share of total imports. Slovenia, Turkey, Belarus, Poland, the UK and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Turkey, with a CAGR of +2,431.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average hop import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hop import price decreased by -9.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 53%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
