Exports from the Russian Federation
In 2022, shipments abroad of hydrogen was finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 235%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, hydrogen exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 177%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Uzbekistan (X cubic meters) was the main destination for hydrogen exports from Russia, with a 85% share of total exports. Moreover, hydrogen exports to Uzbekistan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Armenia (X cubic meters), sixfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Uzbekistan totaled +3.8%.
In value terms, Uzbekistan ($X) remains the key foreign market for hydrogen exports from Russia, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Armenia ($X), with a 7.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Uzbekistan totaled +15.7%.
Export Prices by Country
The average hydrogen export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, with a decrease of -16.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 148%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per cubic meter, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Armenia stood at $X per cubic meter.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Uzbekistan (+11.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Russian Federation
Hydrogen imports into Russia shrank remarkably to X cubic meters in 2022, falling by -32.8% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 217% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, hydrogen imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 192%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Hungary (X cubic meters) was the main hydrogen supplier to Russia, with a approx. 100% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Hungary totaled -1.9%.
In value terms, Hungary ($X) constituted the largest supplier of hydrogen to Russia.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Hungary totaled +11.0%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average hydrogen import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, growing by 30% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, hydrogen import price increased by +21.5% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 58%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per cubic meter. From 2014 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Hungary.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Finland amounted to +66.5% per year.
