In 2021, the Russian luggage market increased by 17% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, saw a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, luggage exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Belarus (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) were the main destinations of luggage exports from Russia, with a combined 83% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Armenia, France, the Netherlands and Latvia, which together accounted for a further 9.7%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +142.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for luggage exported from Russia were Belarus ($X), Kazakhstan ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 75% share of total exports. Ukraine, Armenia, the Netherlands and Latvia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Among the main countries of destination, the Netherlands, with a CAGR of +110.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average luggage export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 15%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Latvia (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2021, the amount of luggage and handbags imported into Russia surged to X tons, growing by 80% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, luggage imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of luggage to Russia, accounting for a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, luggage imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Belarus (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belarus (+32.7% per year) and Italy (-6.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Italy ($X) and Belarus ($X) were the largest luggage suppliers to Russia, with a combined 75% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Belarus, with a CAGR of +14.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average luggage import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -23.1% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, luggage import price increased by +2.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
