For the third consecutive year, the Russian machinery for packing market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 7.4% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, saw a slight decrease. Machinery for packing consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the third year in a row, Russia recorded decline in shipments abroad of machinery for packing or wrapping, which decreased by -18.2% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports saw a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 145% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, machinery for packing exports expanded modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Kazakhstan (X units), Belarus (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main destinations of machinery for packing exports from Russia, together comprising 87% of total exports. Israel and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.9%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Israel (with a CAGR of +58.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X), Belarus ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for machinery for packing exported from Russia worldwide, with a combined 70% share of total exports. Israel and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.1%.

Among the main countries of destination, Israel, with a CAGR of +63.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average machinery for packing export price amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 24% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, machinery for packing export price increased by +110.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kazakhstan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Ukraine ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Romania (+68.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2022, purchases abroad of machinery for packing or wrapping increased by 23% to X units, rising for the seventh consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, machinery for packing imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest supplier of machinery for packing to Russia, with a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, machinery for packing imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by South Korea (X units), with a 9.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +15.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-3.0% per year) and South Korea (+20.0% per year).

In value terms, Italy ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X) appeared to be the largest machinery for packing suppliers to Russia, with a combined 72% share of total imports. South Korea, Denmark, Austria and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

Among the main suppliers, South Korea, with a CAGR of +25.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average machinery for packing import price amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -17.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
