In 2022, exports of machines for making containers of paper or paperboard from Russia declined significantly to X units, waning by -33.3% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 160%. The exports peaked at X units in 2021, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, paperboard container machine exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a pronounced expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 269% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. Lithuania (X units) was the main destination for paperboard container machine exports from Russia, with a 63% share of total exports. Moreover, paperboard container machine exports to Lithuania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Kazakhstan (X units), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Lithuania stood at +38.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kazakhstan (+12.2% per year) and Belarus (+7.2% per year).

In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for machines for making containers of paper or paperboard exports from Russia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lithuania ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kazakhstan totaled +43.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lithuania (+17.6% per year) and Belarus (-9.7% per year).

Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 90%. Imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paperboard container machine imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 89%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X units) constituted the largest paperboard container machine supplier to Russia, accounting for a 66% share of total imports. Moreover, paperboard container machine imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X units), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X units), with a 2.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +14.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-4.5% per year) and Poland (+3.4% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of machines for making containers of paper or paperboard to Russia, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with a 7.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to +14.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (-1.8% per year) and Sweden (+18.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average paperboard container machine import price amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paperboard container machine import price increased by +50.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per unit), while the price for Poland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+15.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
