The Russian marble building stone market surged to $X in 2021, increasing by 21% against the previous year. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 119% against the previous year. Kazakhstan (X tons) was the main destination for marble building stone exports from Russia, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, marble building stone exports to Kazakhstan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Armenia (X tons), sevenfold. Ukraine (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Kazakhstan totaled -1.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Armenia (+18.1% per year) and Ukraine (+2.7% per year).
In value terms, Kazakhstan ($X) remains the key foreign market for marble building stone exports from Russia, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Armenia ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Ukraine, with a 7.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Kazakhstan totaled -7.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Armenia (+12.1% per year) and Ukraine (-5.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average marble building stone export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Belarus ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belarus (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Russian Federation
In 2021, the amount of marble building stone imported into Russia expanded rapidly to X tons, increasing by 11% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, marble building stone imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. Imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Turkey (X tons), Italy (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of marble building stone imports to Russia, with a combined 59% share of total imports. Spain, Greece, Armenia, Belarus and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +46.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Italy ($X), Turkey ($X) and China ($X) constituted the largest marble building stone suppliers to Russia, together comprising 64% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Belarus, Greece, India and Armenia, which together accounted for a further 26%.
