Watermelon Market Size in the Russian Federation

The Russian watermelon market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Watermelon Production in the Russian Federation

Exports from the Russian Federation

Watermelon exports from Russia dropped markedly to X tons in 2022, declining by -53.5% against 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, watermelon exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +2.6% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for watermelon exports from Russia, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, watermelon exports to Japan exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Ukraine (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Japan totaled +1,109.2%.

In value terms, Japan ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for watermelons exports from Russia, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ukraine ($X), with a 3.1% share of total exports.

The average watermelon export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 110% against the previous year. In general, the export price posted moderate growth. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Ukraine totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Estonia (+3.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Russian Federation

In 2022, purchases abroad of watermelons decreased by -14.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 121%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Kazakhstan (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) were the main suppliers of watermelon imports to Russia, together comprising 73% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +208.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Turkey ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Azerbaijan ($X) constituted the largest watermelon suppliers to Russia, with a combined 62% share of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +177.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average watermelon import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 62% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
